Free Credit Counseling for Alaska Residents#
Credit counseling sessions from Cambridge Credit Counseling are free of charge for Alaska residents. Cambridge Credit Counseling counselors are certified and the agency is ISO 9001 registered. Cambridge Credit Counseling is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency, accredited to the Financial Counseling Association of America’s Code of Practice, and is also a member of the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC). During a session, an Alaska resident can review their budget and debt situation with a counselor and learn about their options.
Debt Management Plans for Alaska Residents#
A debt management plan from Cambridge Credit Counseling consolidates the unsecured debts a resident agrees to enroll into one structured monthly payment that Cambridge Credit Counseling sends out to each creditor. It is not a loan and does not involve borrowing new money. Cambridge Credit Counseling’s counselors work with creditors rather than against them, and can present, before a resident signs up, the benefits a creditor is willing to extend, such as a reduced interest rate, a reduced monthly payment, waived late or over-limit fees, and the ability to bring a past-due account back to current after three months of on-time payments. A debt management plan is not a negotiation; almost all of these benefits are preset guidelines that creditors have already established for agencies like Cambridge Credit Counseling to follow. Under the plan, balances are paid in full, with the concessions creditors have put in place. Enrolling can have an initial effect on a credit score, generally because the enrolled accounts are closed, but the long-term effect is generally positive, since payments continue and the accounts run current rather than falling into default. Debt management plan fees are based on state regulations and on the consumer’s ability to pay. This service is available to Alaska residents.
Housing Counseling for Alaska Homeowners and Buyers#
Cambridge Credit Counseling is a HUD-approved housing counseling agency, and this service is available to Alaska residents, including first-time homebuyer courses. A mortgage is a long-term secured loan where the home serves as collateral, and a monthly payment typically includes principal, interest, taxes, and insurance, known as PITI. Homebuyers in Alaska who put down less than 20 percent are usually required to carry private mortgage insurance, which can often be removed once the loan reaches an 80 percent loan-to-value ratio. Alaska residents who cannot afford a 20 percent down payment can contact Cambridge Credit Counseling, a HUD-approved housing counseling agency, to see if they qualify for programs that help toward homeownership.
Student Loan Counseling in Alaska#
Student loan counseling is available to Alaska residents through Cambridge Credit Counseling. This service is meant to help Alaska residents understand their student loan situation and repayment options.
Reverse Mortgage (HECM) Counseling in Alaska#
Reverse mortgage counseling, also known as HECM counseling, is available to Alaska residents through Cambridge Credit Counseling. This counseling is intended for homeowners considering a reverse mortgage and helps them understand how the product works before moving forward.
Bankruptcy Counseling and Debtor Education for Alaska Residents#
Cambridge Credit Counseling is approved by the Department of Justice to provide pre-filing bankruptcy counseling and post-filing debtor education, and this service is available to Alaska residents. Bankruptcy counseling and debtor education each cost $50.00 per household per session and are available free or at a reduced rate based on ability to pay. The fee is per household, not per person, so a married couple filing together pays once. Households with income below 150 percent of the federal poverty guidelines for their household size are presumed eligible for a fee waiver. Households above that line may still qualify for a reduced fee if they can show a temporary financial hardship, such as a recent job loss or drop in income, unexpected medical costs, disability, separation or divorce, the death of a household wage earner, or another documented financial circumstance that significantly impacts the household’s ability to pay. Waivers and reductions are assessed on the household’s current income, expenses and overall financial condition, and Cambridge Credit Counseling will not refuse services to anyone due to inability to pay.
Approval by the U.S. Department of Justice Executive Office of United States Trustees does not endorse or assure the quality of our services.
What Cambridge Credit Counseling Does Not Offer Alaska Residents#
Cambridge Credit Counseling does not offer debt settlement to Alaska residents. Debt settlement means negotiating to pay less than the full balance owed, and it is typically offered by for-profit companies rather than nonprofit credit counseling agencies like Cambridge Credit Counseling. There is no legal right to settle a debt in the United States, and a creditor is not obliged to accept a settlement offer.
On a debt settlement program, a consumer pays money into a special account periodically until enough has accumulated to offer a settlement on an enrolled account. While that money is accumulating, no payments are being made on the consumer’s accounts, so those accounts fall past due and move toward charge-off. During this period, late fees, possible over-limit fees, and penalty interest rates are charged, which makes the balance keep growing, and this non-payment period generally has a deep negative impact on the consumer’s credit score and future cost of borrowing. Debt settlement programs generally do not work with creditors in an agreeable way; they often disconnect the relationship between the consumer and the creditor, frequently through a cease-and-desist letter, which stops collection activity except where a creditor sues for non-payment over time.
Settlement company fees are generally charged at the point of a successful settlement and can range from 15 to 30 percent of the savings or of the settled amount. Successful settlements themselves can range from 30 to 60 percent of the debt owed, and by the time a settlement is reached, many balances have grown to the point where the settlement company’s fees plus the settled amount can come close to the original debt owed at enrollment. Unless the consumer is insolvent, any forgiven debt is taxable as income and the consumer receives a Form 1099-C; when the savings are $600 or more, the creditor also sends a Form 1099 to the IRS.
By comparison, a debt management plan from Cambridge Credit Counseling works with creditors to pay the balance in full, with concessions those creditors have agreed to extend, and fees are based on state regulations and the consumer’s ability to pay. A free debt evaluation with a Cambridge Credit Counseling counselor, like a free credit counseling session, creates no obligation to enroll in any program.

Common questions

Yes. Credit counseling sessions at Cambridge Credit Counseling are free of charge for Alaska residents.
Does Cambridge Credit Counseling offer debt settlement to Alaska residents?
No. Cambridge Credit Counseling does not offer debt settlement, which means negotiating to pay less than the full balance owed. That service is typically offered by for-profit companies rather than nonprofit agencies like Cambridge Credit Counseling. There is no legal right to settle a debt in the United States, and a creditor is not obliged to accept a settlement offer. On a settlement program, no payments are made on enrolled accounts while money accumulates for a future settlement, so accounts fall past due, fees and penalty interest add to the balance, and this generally has a deep negative impact on a consumer's credit score. Any forgiven debt is generally taxable as income unless the consumer is insolvent. A debt management plan from Cambridge Credit Counseling, by contrast, works with creditors to pay the balance in full while keeping accounts current.
What is a debt management plan available to Alaska residents?
A debt management plan combines unsecured debts into one monthly payment that Cambridge Credit Counseling administers. It is not a loan. Cambridge Credit Counseling's counselors work with creditors to obtain preset benefits, such as reduced interest rates, waived fees, and the ability to bring a past-due account back to current after three months of payments, and the balances are paid in full.
How much does the bankruptcy course cost for Alaska residents?
Bankruptcy counseling and debtor education each cost $50.00 per household per session and are available free or at a reduced rate based on ability to pay. The fee is per household, not per person, so a married couple filing together pays once. Households with income below 150 percent of the federal poverty guidelines for their household size are presumed eligible for a fee waiver. Households above that line may still qualify for a reduced fee if they can show a temporary financial hardship, such as a recent job loss or drop in income, unexpected medical costs, disability, separation or divorce, the death of a household wage earner, or another documented financial circumstance that significantly impacts the household's ability to pay. Waivers and reductions are assessed on the household's current income, expenses and overall financial condition, and Cambridge Credit Counseling will not refuse services to anyone due to inability to pay.
