# Financial Wellness Today Episode 5 Special Guest: Eric Smith from Rita
Financial Wellness and Investment Transparency Gordon, Randy and Eric Smith discussed the importance of financial wellness and the need for consumers to have access to information to make informed decisions about their investments. Eric, an attorney turned CEO of Decision Technologies Corporation, shared his experience of being frustrated with the lack of transparency in the financial service industry. He explained how his company's decision assistance technology provides a tool for individual investors to score and rank available investment choices based on their specific needs. Eric emphasized that their product allows users to make decisions based on their own preferences, rather than relying on someone else's opinion. The conversation also touched on the issue of fiduciary responsibility in the financial industry and the need for more transparency in investment advice. ### Episode introduction and video note

Hello, everyone, and welcome to Financial Wellness Today. On today's episode, we have our special guest, Eric Smith from Rita. And basically, Randy and I were talking to Eric about an amazing tool for investment monitoring. Basically, on this episode, and there is some demonstration that goes on, so in the audio, you won't be able to see it, but we're going to post the video version of it so that you can see it, and we'll put that link in the description of the podcast eventually. It's not going to happen when we first post, but we'll have the video version up for your view.

And basically, you know, Eric demonstrated this tool for analyzing and comparing investment funds, focusing on factors such as return, risk, volatility, and expense, and he showed how to adjust the factors of these funds. And there's a filter on Rita that you can put in different parameters that you want to see performance of funds. And it's a tool, quite frankly, that I've never seen before that's very powerful, even to the point where I believe Eric's been challenged because the industry doesn't necessarily love the idea that funds can be compared with this tool. So we're going to dig into that a little bit. And again, the audio version will be released, and then the video version will be eventually put in the bio of the episode, so you can see the actual call where we're talking to Eric, and he's demonstrating on the video version of the podcast.

### Baseball and introductions

So without further ado, here we go. This is Financial Wellness Today, episode number five, interviewing Eric Smith from Rita. Hello, everyone, and welcome to Financial Wellness Today. My name is Gordon Oliver, and I am your host here with my on the mend co-pilot, Randy Nemiroff. Randy, how are you feeling today?

Starting to start my comeback. Yeah, last week with the flu was kind of rough, but I'm on my way back now. So thanks for asking. Even your Super Bowl winning Eagles couldn't get you like revved up and energized and... Well, you got to understand something.

The Eagles won before I got the flu. Okay. And that made you sick. That's even worse. It was probably some of the people that were Kansas City fans that brought the flu to the day got me sick.

So I can still blame them for something, even though it was kind of a one-way game. It certainly was. It wasn't as entertaining as I hoped. And we have a mutual partner that is a Kansas City fan. And I told him that I put a small little wager on the game and they were going to lose as a result because that never works for me.

### Eric Smith background and origin story

So anyway, so listen, I'm really taking some progress here with the show, a really big diversification of information that we are bringing with the intent of giving our partners the opportunity to spread the show, to have consumers, employees, business people really have some information to tap into. To basically work on financial wellness, which is a lifelong process, and even though we have a new administration, everybody's seeing as we knew it was going to be a change in philosophies and that's going to create uncertainty and we were already in just not the greatest economy. So it's going to take some time to really see where things are going to go. So it is an honor today to have our guest, Eric Smith, who's the chairman and CEO of Decision Technologies Corporation, to talk about an amazing product. And again, talking with Eric, hearing the story, I'm so glad and grateful that you're here today because I think people should really know about what you have to offer.

How are you doing, Eric? Great. How are you doing, Gordon? It's great to be here and be on your podcast. Thank you.

Again, we had some discussion getting to know each other offline and you have an amazing, amazing product and an amazing story. So let's start off with. How did you get started in the business that the product that you offer is in? Well, I am not from the financial service industry, and that's an important point because often disruptive technologies do not take place or are created within the industry that's disrupted by them. I was an attorney in private practice, estate planning, corporate business transactions, ERISA, which is retirement plans and that sort of thing.

And I was continually referring my clients into the financial service marketplace virtually daily. And the problem that I had, Gordon, is that they kept bringing the recommendations back to me going, what do you think, Eric? And I would throw my hands up and say, I have no better way to look behind the curtain than you do to figure out why these three are being recommended as opposed to a thousand other choices, completely opaque. Had the results been great, no problem, but the results were often average at best, many times subpar. Clients were not particularly happy, but there's no way for me to win.

I was the guy referring. And it dawned on me one day, and this was in the nature of a real epiphany, a real shock when I realized that all of my clients, whether they sit on the board of a billion dollar pension plan or were a little retiree looking to put $2,000 in a mutual fund, they were all had the same basic question, and that was simply this, of all the available choices, Eric, which one's best for me? And that was it. That's all anybody ever wanted to know. But there was no answer for the question.

There were like nearly 30,000 mutual funds and ETFs, thousands of separately managed accounts. I didn't have an answer. But it so shocked me, the simplicity and obviousness of the question. I must have relegated it to background processing because over a number of years, an answer bubbled to the surface that led to the development of the technology that underlies the products we have. And it's a decision assistance technology that lets us score and rank hundreds, if not thousands of available choices in mere moments.

### Introducing Rita through the Perk Plans platform

But in a manner specific to the individual. So the big thing here with this is what's different than everything else, like Morning Star or any of these other ranking systems. The users of our tools can do it their way. You're not buying somebody else's opinion. You can do it your way.

So important distinction. I learned from a mentor to be able to always admit you don't know what you don't know. And an investment is definitely not my area of expertise. And I know it's very confusing. And as a consumer, there's always been that shade on the stock market, on the investment advice.

Who's a fiduciary? Who isn't a fiduciary? What's their intention? And as I've understood it, this is not a question of who's going to buy it, who's not going to buy it. This is not you giving financial advice.

This is giving a tool to help the consumer understand how they can look at how investments that are being made on their behalf are performing. Absolutely. And the point you made about not knowing what you don't know is huge. Here's why. It's worse than you think about whether you're a fiduciary or non-fiduciary today, you're forced to rely on someone else's opinion.

Because here's the truth that nobody really pays much attention to anymore because it's ubiquitous. Everybody in the world has this same experience. And that is when you get your brokerage statement or your quarterly review, you get to see only two things, what you have versus a benchmark index. That's it. But what everybody should ideally want to see is how did mine do versus all of the other choices in that asset class that I could have selected.

You don't get that. Even your investment advisor doesn't have that information. So at the end of the day, you're comparing two things, but you really don't know how good that benchmark index is or what you have against really the top performers in each asset class. And that's what this tool, RETA, which stands for Retail Investment Tracking Application for Individual Investors, gives an investor the ability to do for the first time ever. OK, so I want to give some credit, I'm sorry, I want to give some credit to Randy because Randy, obviously, is the president and CEO of Perk Plans, which we are at Cambridge Credit Counseling, an opportunity for consumers and employees to get debt counseling and potential debt reduction strategies.

And the reason we're doing this podcast is because there's so many great trusted partners on that platform. And when Randy first introduced me to RETA, I kind of was, you know, headspace wise, I wasn't really gathering it. So Randy, why don't you tell our listeners how you connected with Eric and why you knew it would be a perfect part for the Perk Plans platform? Right. Thanks, Gordy.

So Eric was introduced to me by another co-worker and I started learning a little bit more about his product and the services that he offers. And I just felt it was a perfect fit because I've never seen anything like this before. So what we did was we did some more research on it because we like vetting very thoroughly all of the partners that we bring on, especially our financial partners, because we're going to be introducing them to a lot of our membership. So I'm just going to share my screen with you real quick. I'm going to let Eric get into it later.

But when you're looking at the Perk Plans platform. And we're just going to go to access perks real quick. I'm just going to show people where to find it if they want to get more information on it. And while you're doing that for our listeners, when we post the podcast, you can find the video link in the description of the show. So I'll make sure that I put it there.

So Eric is basically listed. These are all the categories that Perk Plans offers from home services to financial wellness, education, national and local retailers, health and wellness and so forth. But under financial wellness, we have a couple of different partners that we utilize. First of all, right in the middle is Cambridge Credit Counseling. There we are.

OK, perfect. To the left of Cambridge is our partner that does student loan refinancing. They always remember, you know, the average person right now is paying eight to 10 percent. We're refinancing people now starting below five. So, you know, Perk Plans is here to not only give you discounts on services, but also find you resources that can help you save money.

Now, when you're looking at Rita, Rita cannot just save you money, but can make you money. That's kind of the tagline that Eric brought to the forefront. And basically, once you click on it, if you're a member, you're going to go directly to the landing page. If you're not a member, it's going to basically ask you to set up an account. So I'm going to let Eric now take over and explain exactly what Rita is to our audience.

And I just wanted to make sure people knew where to find it. And if anybody ever has any questions on it, they can literally go right to Perk Plans dot com. They go right to their own company's platform or contact me directly. So, Eric, take it away. Tell us about Rita.

Well, let me let me go back and touch on one thing about the financial wellness. Here's how Rita really fits into that whole ecosystem that Randy is putting together on the Perk Plans site. You talked about saving money. Well, first thing is make money, which everybody on your platform has a job. Presumably they're making money.

Then you learn how to budget money, save money. And then once you've saved money, you have money hopefully to invest. Rita is at that stage to help you invest it optimally so that you can do better. You and your family can simply do better. Randy, can you pull stop sharing and let me share a screen that on my side?

### Live demonstration of the Rita tool

Sure, Ken. And Eric, while you're bringing up the screen, and I think this is important, too. Whether you follow Yahoo Finance or Morningstar or Motley Fool or any of these, you know, just advisory services, it is very complex in many ways when you're trying to figure out what exactly to do. So what you're going to show when you share your screen on how the product works, I think that one of the biggest, most attractive pieces of it is the ease of use to find out based on whatever parameters you want to look at as a consumer, being able to see the top is performing funds, because that seems to be a lot of where people are confused where to go and look who to trust. So that's why, again, the tool, when you showed it to me, was just incredible.

And I think it's going to show people that that take a look at it, how if they're looking to get some simple advice rating wise, right, not what to put your money into. But if you're going to make a decision on some funds, this tool is phenomenal. Yeah, there's nothing like it. Let me just tell you that there is a lot of educational material on this site. It's readily accessible.

There are huge numbers of questions that are answered on here, and the answers are brief and to the point. You know, you can come down. There's probably at least 50 common questions that people might have that there's easy to find answers on. But probably more, you know, potentially entertaining and educational are the news stories. Let me just highlight one real quickly.

Well, maybe a couple. One of them is this. People often ask me, well, what's Rita like? Well, the easiest answer is if you've seen the movie Moneyball, what we're doing with Rita is a lot like what happened in the movie Moneyball. There, the ballplayers were being picked on the basis of opinions of scouts.

If you stop to think about it, virtually every investor in the country is picking their mutual funds and ETFs on the opinion of brokers or investment advisors. Well, when the Oakland A's brought in the little tech guy who started comparing players on the basis of pure performance, it disrupted everything. S. patent on it, to do the same thing in mutual fund and ETF selection. We're going to let people compare the funds on the basis of pure performance and in a way that filters out all conflicts of interest.

Let me share a screen with you to see if this works. Can you see that screen, the Rita screen? If I log in and sign up for it, I'm going to get two choices here. I'm going to get, and everybody can sign up free. There is a free version of Rita.

If you scroll down that landing page that you'll see, when you go to the PERC Plan site, you scroll down, you're going to see, hold on just a second, let me go back to that screen. You're going to see where you can sign up for the free Rita checkup tool. The only difference, and I'm going to start with that tool, the difference between that tool and the full paid version. By the way, you can take the Rita challenge and win a full free year of Rita if you just follow those instructions. But the only thing about the free tool is you don't get to see the names of the funds.

So if you're scoring and ranking and you see your funds are really not performing well, and you see the ones at the top performing better, and this is fully functional, you might say, well, you know what, I'm not sure that I want to sign up for a full year of Rita. Let me just see the names of the funds. We give you the option to quote, spend a day with Rita. 97, you can spend 24 hours, see everything fully functional, but you can only do that once. Okay, but that's how you sign up.

That's how you go. Let me go back to the Rita. I'm going to go for the full version of it with the names. You guys, do you have any fund that you'd like me to score and rank for you? Off the top of my head, I do not.

How about you, Randy? Would have been nice to be a little prepared. I could have had a list of my current investments. That nasty cough got you unprepared. Yeah, I was just not thinking.

How about if I just use an index fund? Let's say if I just did S&P 500, and then let's say value. What if I did an iShare value? Let's see if there's a Vanguard handy. This will list 50 funds, and I can type in the name or I can type in the ticker symbol and get to them.

So once I do that, it'll identify that as a large cap value fund. You all are seeing this on the screen, are you not? Yes. Okay. Once I do that, all I have to do is come over here and click the gearbox.

Once I do that, it will bring up a default screen, which effectively is a neutral weighting between return-related factors and risk-related factors. 50-50 on each. The return factors are a blend of 1, 3, and 5-year average annual return, and the risk factors are 1, 3, and 5-year. ASD stands for annualized standard deviation. Sounds complex.

All it is is volatility. How volatile is it? Because the more volatile a fund, in other words, the higher this number, the riskier it is, especially in down markets. So this starts out, and it gives you this every time you plug in a fund. It all starts the same way.

If you're in it, it'll give you some basic instructions down at the bottom, but I can go down. I can click this and go down 50 deep in this. Now, notice at this weighting, which is a pretty conservative weighting, the S&P 500 ranked 100 out of 450. Well, that's in the top quartile. You think, okay, that's pretty good, but even in this conservative weighting, look at the performance gap between that and the number one fund.

It's over nearly three and a half points per year for five years, and the number one fund is actually less risky. So what you have here is a good bit of return premium for no equivalent risk premium. In fact, you would lower your risk in your portfolio if you had that fund. Now I'm going to come in here and show you that you can do, you can actually add a lot more factors to this and change the weights. The first thing everybody would typically want to do is say, you know what, this is pretty conservative.

I'm a little bit more aggressive than that. Let me put a little bit more weight on return. So if you look at the left-hand side and the names or numbers, I'm going to make that 60% instead of 50% with one click. I actually overshot it a little bit and got to 65%. But notice that dropped in rank four positions to 104 and the performance gap, because it brought up a higher performing fund, notice that that performance gap is now five points per year for the last five years.

And still over the three years, the volatility is right at the same number, less volatile over one year, a little bit more volatile over five. So that's pretty equivalent in risk, but the return over the last year is over six, nearly seven points difference. And over the last three years on average, over three and a half. Let's go over here and I'm going to show you, if you're interested in what the fund did in the last three months, you can click on that. I think that's too short a period to wait.

So if I click on it, I can go down to zero, but it still shows on the screen. 2002 was a down year. I might want to increase the weight on the shorter terms, more recent periods. I can do that for both risk and return easily. If you thought that five years is too short, I can add in 10 years for both return and volatility.

And then I can come down here, and obviously the expense of the fund is important, so I can put a lot of weight on it. How big the fund is, I can add, because I may not want to put a lot of money in a fund that doesn't have much money, so I may just want to see it. And then focus, I might put that in because that is a diversification factor, how much of the fund is in the top 10 choices. Now you can do this, and you can change this as much as you want. You'll never see a spinning circle on this.

You're not going to get bored with it, and you can do what-if analyses, like, well, what if I change this in seconds? And you'll notice that when I added all these other factors in, and I'm going to put 5% on miscellaneous, iShares went up by about, oh, 40 places. But let's take a look at the top-scoring ones. Over 10 years, it's still a one-and-a-half-point difference. Over 10 years, the performance gaps tend to narrow.

But now we've got better-performing funds at the top. You can see the performance gaps when you just go down here and start comparing. Now, in this particular one, the Russell 1000 is the index. Here's the important point. If you're meeting with your investment advisor, here's what you're going to be typically told.

You've outperformed this index over the last 10 years on average, over the last five years on average, over the last three years on average. You're underperforming in the last year, but overall, this fund's performed great for you, Randy. What more could you ask for? And it's right at the index volatility level. Okay, Eric.

### Learning to use Rita and its benefits

So if a consumer BERC plans member is looking to utilize RETA, for some people, this is still overwhelming, right? Is there training in there that teaches you how to use the tool? Absolutely. So when you go over here and click on this, you can scan down, and you'll see a lot of the factors explained here. Each of the factors has an explanation.

When you go into it, you're going to be able to see a video here that'll explain how to use it. Basically, what I've gone through with you, you'll be able to actually watch the videos. Every one of them's got instructions all the way through, so you can look at it as many times as you want. I went through it relatively quickly because I just wanted to show people the power of it, Gordon. I didn't want to overwhelm everybody, but the difference in performance is something people really need to see to believe, because this is real money.

If you have, let's say, 5% compounding every year for five years, you're talking close to 35% to 40% more money in that one asset class, in that one investment. That's big. That's huge. That's better than most, and that's over already, for instance, 9% or 10%. Eric, let me ask you a question.

Who exactly is your customer that we're trying to attract? Well, anybody with mutual funds or ETFs, Randy. If you've got an IRA, you're typically in mutual funds or ETFs, and you need help in picking and monitoring them. If you've got a 401k plan and you've got multiple choices in that, or if you've got what's called an open brokerage window where you can go out in the market and buy anything, you really need to have Rita by your side to help you identify what's best. Now, you may get into your 401k plan, and you only have two or three choices.

Well, of the two or three, this can help you pick the best of the three, but what it may also show you is that the choices in your plan are not really that good. So, what you may want to do is take your iPad or your laptop into HR and bring up Rita and say, you know, look, ours is down here in 120, and look how much better these at the top are. Do you think we can get a hold of our investment consultant and get better choices in the plan? So, a lot of ways to use it. So, for all those people that have a 401k out there, and they're allowing their investment consultant for the company to show them what funds they should be in, this is a great way to track exactly how well that consultant is doing for you, and then even show him where this tool can help improve your financial situation.

It'll not only do help improve the employee's performance by improving the choices, it'll actually make the investment consultant better. There's a professional version of this tool that the consultants can have and the company can actually get to monitor themselves what's going on in the investment advice they're getting, and that's going to help the company do a better job as a fiduciary in their role to do what's best under ERISA for the employees. ERISA being the Employee Retirement Income Security Act that governs pension plans like this. All right, so some people aren't watching, some people are listening. So, let's just, in five sentences, break down why a person should utilize RETA.

What's the tool? Why is it easy to use? How will it change their way of things? Well, number one, they're going to get to see something no one in the world has ever seen. They're going to get to compare how their funds do against every other choice, and as you've seen on the screen, make more money.

This is the proof behind the claim on the PERC Plan site. Of all the great PERCs on the PERC Plan site, this one can make you money, not just save you money. And by the way, PERCs Plans gives you a discount on the retail cost of RETA. So, the other thing is that if you use RETA regularly, like every quarter, you can start to see when your choices start to drop in rank. Now, this is again something no one in the world has ever seen, because when you see that, you're also going to see who's moving up in rank.

Same asset class, same market conditions, same investment goals, same weighting structure. And this helps you deal with one of the principal causes of chronic underperformance that investors all over the world suffer, and that's from holding poor performers, Gordon, far too long. And the reason why they do that is because no one wants to feel doubly dumb. No one wants to get out of a bad one into a worse one. So, better the devil I know than the devil I don't know, and they will hold on to that poor performer until it gets so bad that, man, anything's got to be better than this.

### Where to find Rita and investor empowerment

But by that time, they've lost a boatload of money. As you start to see it drop and you see the ones coming up with a high degree of confidence, you can make a move out of the ones that are declining in performance into the ones moving up and keep your investments optimized. There's nothing in the world available that will let you do that for RETA. All right, so for people listening, they can find RETA through PERC plans. If it's an enterprise deal, obviously we would request when you get in contact with Eric that you just explain that you heard it on financial wellness today so he knows that you listened to our dialogue to really talk about this amazing tool.

So, Eric, before we wrap things up, this has been incredible. Again, every time I see this tool, I can't believe that for so long people have not really had access to this self-auditing measure, right, to see how things are being planned. And I don't even know, you know, it's not even about intention. It's about a tool that just gives you even more control of just knowing things that are being invested for you, where they stand, and that you can make changes if you want to based on information. Well, the key word, Gordon, is empowerment, true investor empowerment.

When we pioneered this, we tested this for over 10 years before we brought it to market with real money, real portfolios. We know it works. We've experienced it. And when we were introducing it to clients, most often the response was this, wow, why hasn't it always been this way? And the answer was the financial service industry has been vendor-dominated since inception.

And no vendor of mutual funds or ETFs or investment products wants you to have the ability to compare theirs against all of the others because marketing goes on with incentive compensation. We'll pay you a quarter point more if you market ours, recommend ours versus the other guys. That corrupts everything. That corrupts advice. This, by filtering out all of the behind-the-scenes deals, relationships, this is giving you pure, objective, performance-based truth.

Who's the best? Not the best in some abstract sense, but the best at performing in the way that I think would be ideal for me. That's why we let you change the weights. That's why we let you pick factors or take out factors. You can do this as often as you want, as many times, as many ways.

Do all the experiments until you feel comfortable that this is the ideal performance for me. And what this will show you is who's been the best over time at producing that. Now, right after that Moneyball article, you'll see another article on the Insights tab, and it makes an important point. Mutual funds and ETFs are not products, Gordon, that you buy. They're teams, investment management teams that you're betting on.

And just like in professional sports, we want to put our money on the best team. And this will let you see which ones those are according to what's important to you. So empowerment's the key here. Absolutely. So where can our listeners find you?

Well, they can find us. You can get to all of this information on the PERC Plan site by clicking on that tab on the PERC Plan site. Go straight to the landing page. I believe all of the links are active on that page, are they not, Randy? I'm on there right now, actually.

If you go to PERC Plans and you go to Financial Wellness. You'll get to see them all. You'll get to see all the information, the videos, the frequently asked questions, all of the articles. By the way, there's one in there where we saw an article come across our desk that said Warren Buffett owns two ETFs. That shocked me.

I didn't think Warren Buffett owned any two ETFs. And the implication was these have got to be great because Warren Buffett owns them. So guess what we did? We scored and ranked them using Rita. The best one that he had scored 88, according to what's important.

So on the title, you'll see Warren Buffett owns two ETFs with Rita. You can pick better ones. So with this, you can outperform Warren Buffett in this world. That's awesome. Thanks so much, Eric.

### Closing remarks and contact information

And Randy, financial wellness today. What better than a tool that can tell you with inputs that you put in and benchmarks that you can enter to look at funds that either you're investing in or that you'd like to consider not being given advice by sales pitches, but given advice by data. Yeah, you know, it's amazing. I mean, we're out there, you know, adding new perks to the platform all the time. And, you know, you come across, you know, you're referred to a lot of different organizations.

You know, after you get done vetting them, you have to decide whether or not you want to add them to the platform or not. This was a no brainer. This was very easy to add to the platform. And I look forward to seeing the reaction from all of our membership nationwide. Yes, sir.

Eric, this is incredible today. Thank you so much for joining us. I think it would be a good idea in a couple of months to come back on and really kind of give us some developments on how things are going. I'd like to continue to have this brought up. As we build our our listener base and our viewer base, because this is such an important wellness tool that people should absolutely consider utilizing when it comes to investments, investment dollars.

So thank you so much for joining us today. Well, thank you, guys. I really appreciate the opportunity to make this available to the Perk Plans users and to have an opportunity to explain it. It's really easier than you think. And when you go to the articles, you're going to see information out there that no one else has because no one has a tool like this.

You know something, Eric, you just sparked an idea for the show. And I think this might be a way that we can enhance what we're doing. I will talk to you offline about this and listeners, again, some of the best ideas come in collaboration. But I think it might be a bad idea to add the financial wellness today webinar series so we can start doing webinars with our partners that fully get into detail and explanation. So not only can people listen to the show and say, oh, man, this is something that's incredible or I'm interested to.

And then they can go to the webinar series and have it backed up by a detailed explanation of everything that we're doing and how a tool like this works for people. So I'll contact you about that offline. I think that's something we should do. Sounds great. I'm looking forward to the opportunity to help in any way we can.

It's all about the folks, you know, transferring the balance of power from Wall Street to Main Street to individual investors where we believe it's always below. Been on my mind before I met you for years. So the fact that we've been put in touch, Randy, thank you very much for that. Incredible stuff. I look forward to working with you.
