# Nonprofit vs For-Profit Debt Help: What Is the Difference?
Cambridge Credit Counseling is a nonprofit credit counseling agency. We focus on education and debt management plans that work with your current creditors. For-profit companies typically sell debt settlement, which negotiates to pay less than what you owe, though a few large nonprofit agencies now offer it too; Cambridge Credit Counseling does not offer debt settlement in any form. A counseling session with us is free, and a debt settlement evaluation is also free and creates no obligation to enroll. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau publishes guidance explaining these differences so you can compare your options in plain English.

## What Nonprofit Status Means for Cambridge Credit Counseling

Cambridge Credit Counseling Corp is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1996 and headquartered in Agawam, Massachusetts. Since then, we have provided credit counseling and financial literacy education to consumers nationwide.

## Services Cambridge Credit Counseling Offers

Cambridge Credit Counseling is a nonprofit agency that offers credit counseling, debt management plans, housing counseling, student loan counseling, reverse mortgage counseling, and bankruptcy counseling. These services are meant to help you understand your options rather than push a single product.

## How Debt Settlement Differs

Debt settlement means negotiating to pay less than the full balance owed. There is no legal right to settle a debt in the United States, so a creditor is not obliged to accept an offer. On a debt settlement program, a consumer pays money into a special account periodically until enough has accumulated to offer a compromise on an enrolled account. While that money is accumulating, no payments are being made on the accounts, so they fall past due and age toward charge-off, and late fees, possible over-limit fees, and penalty interest rates increase the balances in the meantime. This period of non-payment generally has a deep negative impact on a consumer's credit score and on their future cost of borrowing. Debt settlement programs generally do not work with a consumer's creditors in an agreeable way; they generally disconnect the relationship, often through a cease-and-desist letter, which stops collection activity except where the creditor sues the consumer for non-payment. If a settlement is reached, the forgiven amount is generally taxable as income unless the consumer is insolvent, and the consumer receives a Form 1099-C reporting it. Settlement fees are generally charged at the point of a successful settlement and can range from 15 percent to 30 percent of the savings or of the settled amount. Successful settlements themselves can range from 30 percent to 60 percent of the debt owed, and by the time a settlement is reached, many balances have grown enough that the settlement company's fees plus the settled amount can come close to the original debt owed at enrollment.

### How a debt management plan differs

Cambridge Credit Counseling's debt management plan works differently. Our counselors work with your creditors to obtain the benefits those creditors are willing to extend, an approach that is not adversarial, and we can present the benefits and concessions before you sign up for the plan. The plan consolidates the accounts you agree to enroll into a single payment made to Cambridge Credit Counseling, and we send a proposal to each enrolled account to secure those benefits, which typically include a reduced interest rate, one simple lower monthly payment, the waiving of late and over-limit fees where an account is behind or over the limit, and re-aging a past-due account back to current after three months of payments. A debt management plan is not a negotiation; almost all of the benefits are preset guidelines that creditors have established for agencies like ours to follow, and under the plan your balances are paid in full, with the concessions your creditors have put in place. Creditors on a plan generally stop collection calls once payments begin, and the plan brings past-due accounts back to current status, which doing nothing does not. Staying current on the plan helps avoid further late payments and charge-offs, and paying the debt down while keeping accounts current rebuilds a payment history over time. Cambridge Credit Counseling sets the fees on its plan by what a household can afford, within the maximum each state allows, and explains them before you decide whether to enroll. A nonprofit agency's fees are generally lower than a for-profit settlement company's, both up front and over the life of the debt. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau publishes guidance on the difference between credit counseling, debt settlement, debt consolidation, and credit repair, so you can review the details from a neutral source before deciding what fits your situation.

## Debt Management Plans Are Built With Creditors

Cambridge Credit Counseling's debt management programs are structured and endorsed by creditors to help consumers facing significant financial difficulty. Creditor benefits on a debt consolidation program typically include a reduction of interest rates, one simple lower monthly payment, elimination of certain fees, and re-aging past-due accounts to a current status. On the balances and rates our clients actually brought to their plans, the same debts would have cost 44,676 dollars in interest and taken 272 months to pay off at their original terms. On a debt management plan, those clients are projected to pay $4,936 in interest and our fees.

Cambridge Credit Counseling is also a 501(c)(3) nonprofit accredited under the FCAA Code of Practice and approved by HUD. When you compare providers, checking for recognized certifications and accreditations can help you understand who you are working with.
